Before any grinding or surface grinding operation, steel blades and parts must undergo heat treatment to achieve the hardness and toughness required for their final application.

🔥 Why is heat treatment an essential step?
A stainless knife steel, such as X46Cr13, cannot be used in its raw state. It must undergo austenitising — heating between 930°C and 1,080°C for a defined period — before being rapidly cooled to transform its crystalline structure into martensite, the hard phase. Tempering is then applied, between 180°C and 500°C, to adjust toughness and prevent brittleness. Without this precise cycle, the blade will not hold its edge, and may break or deform during grinding.

Based in Bönen, Germany, WMU GmbH has been designing, manufacturing and installing industrial furnaces for metal heat treatment for over 30 years. Each installation is a custom-built project, sized according to the customer’s specific requirements: material, geometry, production volume and level of automation.
In 2001, WMU founded its sister company GFT (Glüh- und Fuge Technik), which operates several furnace installations on the same site. These facilities are used for process development, R&D and as a backup solution for customers in case of emergency.
